Day trip to Washington DC from NYC?
Is it possible to make a day trip to washington DC form NYC? If I leave early from NYC by train? I am not talking about the commercial bus tours but doing it by ourselves. I wish to see White house, Capitol building and a couple of some major attractions, not much museums and stuff. I have an international flight ahead and I have 3 days in NYC. I want to squeeze in DC because I don't know if I get another chance to visit US. Thanks.

Yes you can make a day trip to DC from NYC. The trip from the Big Apple to the Nation's Capital take about 3.5 to 4 hours on Amtrak, depending on the train your taking. A one way ticket on the Northeast Regional will range between $72 and $103, while a one fare on the Acela Express, which is an high speed train, will range between $133 and $155. However, if you leave on an early train, you'll most likely take the Northeast Regional, which is cheaper. I hope this information is very helpful. Good luck Native New Yorker

Native gave you some good advice, which I'll add to-- If you take the 6:45 Amtrak Northeast Regional train from New York's Penn Station, you'll arrive at Washington Union Station at 10:10am--just a few minutes after most of the attractions open. Walk out the front entrance of Washington Union Station and you'll be facing the US Capitol. If you reserve a 10:45 tour via their website, you'll get an appreciation of the Capitol and the US Congress. From there you can walk down Capitol Hill towards the dozen-odd Smithsonian Museums, taking your pick. If the Smithsonian isn't your thing, visit the National Archives to see the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, or maybe stop in at the National Gallery of Art. When the museums close at 5:00, head back to Washington Union Station either by foot (if you still have the energy) or via the Metro subway, which has a station right underneath. Grab some dinner at one of the restaurants or eatery food stands, and get on Amtrak's 6:10 Northeast Regional train, which arrives back in New York at 9:25pm. A busy day, but it can easily be done.
