so.. washington dc with my class or africa for a missionary trip with my gma?
at our school, the upcoming senior class always goes to washington dc in the june before senior year. we leave anywhere from the 2nd 2 4th week.. and my gma told me that shes going to africa in june of 2010 (also same time i might be goin 2 dc). and i would ask my school counselor if she has the trip planned yet, to see if maybe i can go to africa and then go 2 dc or vice versa, but my guess is that she doesnt have it planned yet. either way, i have 2 pay for the trip entirely by myself! so do i go 2 africa or do i go to dc with my class? reasons y i wanna go 2 dc: its my class, and i wanna spend as much time with my class b4 we all go off 2 college. its dc, itd be amazing! reasons y i dont wanna go 2 dc: i dont get along with EVERYBODY in my class, and i dont want any drama! reasons y i wanna go 2 africa: DUH!, its africa! thatd be an amazing oppurtunity! reasons y i dont wanna go: ive never flown before, and all the way 2 africa, thats a super long flight, and over seas! my gmas goin with her church, and i dont like her church at all! and yes ive tried it many times! this grandma and i get along, but i cant spend all that much time with her before i go insane! lol.. and of course, and not number one, but probly close 2 number one for me is that i wont have my phone! i mentioned that id go insane with my gma, well id go especially without my phone. -and i dont mean to sound like one of those rich spoiled brats that only cares about their phone, but its literally my lifeline-

international flights arent bad at all. so dont let that stop you. i've flown from the us to various parts of europe several times. they play a couple of movies, give you head phones so you can listen to music, and feed you. plus when are you going to get the chance to go to africa again???? you can go to d.c. anytime! i would definitely choose africa if i were you. it's a once in a lifetime experience.

Ultimately, the decision is yours, but here's my take on the situation. Africa is clearly more of a "once in a lifetime" opportunity, whereas, Washington D.C. is probably a more realistic trip you could make in the future. It would probably be good for any of us to take a trip to Africa, especially as a missionary because we could all use a lesson in the harsh reality of the rest of the world. I've never been to D.C., but I do know all of the amazing sights there are to see there, so I couldn't blame you for going, but perhaps Africa is the kind of trip you shouldn't pass on. Getting a glimpse of a different culture can never hurt you in the long run.

Go to Africa while you have the opportunity. DC is easier to get around to later on. Plus you'd enjoy it more when you've actually got the time and the money to see everything DC has to offer.

I would absolutely go to Africa and maybe work in some time where you could either spend time with your grandmother alone (away from the church) or even some time out on your own. Africa is AFRICA, I know it sounds silly but it really is (ugh cliche) a once in a lifetime opportunity. Washington DC could be fun, and I know travel is always a little more entertaining with friends. But really, DC is a whole lotta museums and monuments. Africa is the Safari! The Desert! Those animals in the zoo? They actually live there! Out in the open! (er...don't feed them) It's pure crazyness. What you could do, so that you don't miss out on seeing all your friends on last time, is maybe invite them all over for a party! Everyone loves parties! Or maybe you and some of your closer friends could go on a little road trip to somewhere kind of local, road trips are always great for fun times and memories, and usually pretty cool budget wise. It would be kind of rough without your phone, but I've done that when I did international travel and it wasn't really so awful. Mind you I wasn't alone with my grandma, and I don't know how much time you spend texting to your friends, but it's not so bad. Bring a journal to write down every experience you have (even if you go to DC, travel journals are always fun to look back on) And send postcards as a 'tee-hee, I'm using snail mail. Maybe even put a few 'omg its 2 kool here' just to be a little dork. Maybe it won't be even close to texting, but I promise it'll be fun! Also, ask your grandma about all the crazy stuff she's done in her life, get her to think of you less like a granddaughter and more like a friend it might go a little easier. Seriously, grandmas have crazy ass stories. Flights aren't that bad at all, I had something like a 16 hour flight and forgot to sleep because I was just watching all the free movies. It's just like a long road trip with tv! And peanuts :) If you don't have an awesome time you can come back and tell me 'I told you so!' Feel better? :D Either one you choose is going to be lots of fun though, so don't fret too much!
