Cheapest way to get from Washington DC to upstate Michigan?
I'm trying to get from DC to upstate Michigan but I'm doing this on a poor college kid budget. Flights don't seem to be going much cheaper than $800 and driving would be ballpark $240... but I don't think I could do 14 hours on the road by myself without falling asleep. Does anyone know how I could get from point A to point B for $300 or cheaper?

You can fly to Binghamton, NY with United/Continental Airlines. The flight is about 90 minutes non-stop between WAS and BGM. http://411newyork.org/guide/2007/08/13/reserving-flights-to-new-york/ If you still want the bus, Greyhound goes to Binghamton, NY http://www.greyhound.com/en/locations/terminal.aspx?city=150205 Flight: 90 minutes (1.5 hours) at US$400.00+ Round Trip Bus: 540 minutes (9 hours) at US$145.00+ Round Trip

I have done this bus ride many times. It is a LONG bus ride. The shortest, cheapest, and most comfortable way to make the trip is to take the Peter Pan or Bonanza bus from New York City's Penn Station to Binghamton. It is still not a particularly comfortable ride and it will take you something on the order of three-and-a-half hours in normal traffic conditions, more during rush hour and less on weekends. Making the trip by bus from Washington, D.C., is insane. It is possible but I do NOT recommend it.

There's definitely a bus from Port Authority Bus Terminal in NYC directly to Binghamton. Greyhound, Bonanza, Peter Pan are the bus lines. The trip is about 4 hours. The Port Authority Bus Terminal is at 8th Avenue and 40th Street in Manhattan. Book with one of the above-mentioned bus lines. Do not use cheap bus lines. You can get to the bus terminal from JFK by cab (expensive) or using the Air Train from JFK to the Long Island Railroad station in Jamaica, then transferring to the Long Island Railroad into Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan. From there, take a cab up 8th Avenue for about 10 blocks to the bus terminal. You can travel by bus from Washington to Bingo as well, but you'll have to change busses in Manhattan and the road trip from Washington to NYC is a total misery. At least 8 hours for the total trip end to end.

Check out www.megabus.com They are running a promotion where you can get $1 seats from NY to Binghamton.

Hmmn. There are two bus lines from New York to Binghamton: Greyhound and Coach USA/ShortLine. (Megabus sells tickets for the Coach USA bus.) Bonanza does not go to Binghamton, and as far as I can remember never has. From Washington, you'd have to go to NY first, and change buses, so don't do that. The Short Line buses tend to be a little faster, but not hugely so. Schedules from NY to Binghamton are on the two web sites below. To get from JFK airport to the bus terminal, take the JFK Airtrain to the Jamaica station, and the E subway to the bus terminal stop. To get from EWR airport to the bus terminal, take the CoachUSA/Olympia bus that goes directly to the bus terminal. One other thought: if you haven't bought your plane tickets yet, see what the price would be for a ticket from wherever you're flying from to Binghamton, connecting at IAD (Washington.) It may well be only a little more than the ticket to IAD, and it's a lot less hassle than the bus.

First time flyer needs help
First time flyer needs help.?
Okay so I'm getting on my first airplane in a month. I'm traveling from Pittsburgh, PA to Portland, ME. I have a connecting flight in Washington, DC, I was wondering if I'll have to go through security again in DC or if I can go to the connecting flight gate. Any help would be great! :) Btw, I'm flying by myself so I'm a little freaked out. :(

you should only have to go through security once

Most of the time, when you go thru security once, you won't need to again unless... your a smoker and go outside(such as in Dallas). As long as you stay inside the airport area around the gates and such, you won't need to go thru security again. I used to travel internationally alot.
3 :
You don't have to go through security a second time unless you leave the DC airport or if you're on an international flight. You're obviously not on an international flight, and I don't recommend leaving the airport unless your layover is longer than 5 hours. Pittsburgh to Portland is a relatively short flight. Bring your iPod/mp3 player, a book, and a magazine.
4 :
It's cool and calm. But a looooot boring.trust me layover is a fright mare.
5 :
if you will not leave the transit area you won't go through security again, if you think of leaving then you will get through security again :D
6 :
Bella, you just need to go to your next gate. Do not go out of the secured area as there is no need for you to do so. Just check the TV monitor to see what the gate is for your connecting flight. Just go to the gate. Regards, Dan
7 :
aw dont be scared!! :) the security there is so over the top there is no possible way anything can happen to you, plus the pilot knows what theyre doing, so theres really nothing to worry about. and no you wont have to go to security again you just go straight to the gate
8 :
You will be just fine, nothing to worry about. If you are confused about where to go, just find someone with an airport badge and ask them. They should be able to point you in the right direction. As for security, you will only go through security once, in Pittsburgh....unless you decide to step out of security for some reason...then you would have to go through again.

Will I see him
Will I see him?
I have to ask it again: I dont have a Schengen visa. My flight to Washington,DC will make a connection at Schiphol. I'll have to wait there for 5 hours. Do you think I can see my Dutch friend?

No you cannot see him. You will not be allowed to leave a certain area of the airport and your friend won't be allowed to enter that area. Sorry. Why not try to get a Schengen visa?
2 :
NO. You can't leave the secured area. When going through arrivals you need to have a reason to enter the Netherlands. Only if you had a stopover, whith a ticket to show for it, you can leave, but not in this case. I know you would be very eager to see him/her, but than you should have booked a stopover in Amsterdam.
3 :
You need to be in the airport something like three hours before an international flight. No one is allowed past security unless they are actually flying somewhere. It will probably take you at least an hour to get through customs to get OUT of the airport, and three hours to get back in. On the assumption that your flight in arrives ON TIME, you might have an hour. Do you really think so?
4 :
I remember your last question about Schiphol where it was not clear As I explained before, if you hold a US/Canadian etc (link I sent last time) passport that entitles you to travel under the Visa Waiver Program, then you will not need a Schengen Visa If you do not not fall under the Visa Waiver Program or hold a EU/EEA passport, then you will need a Schegen visa to exit the passport control area of Schiphol. Your friend cannot enter via passport control without a airplane ticket (and of course passport). Therefore unless you have one of these options, then the answer is no, you cannot see one another at Schiphol during your stopover As Vincent mentioned - why not just investigate the possibilities of obtaining a Schengen visa? Contact the Dutch embassy in your home country.
