US Travelers: What's the best place to stop overnight between California and Washington DC ? ?
Hi I will be coming to America in February - arriving mid morning in either Los Angeles or San Francisco, (not sure which airport yet). My final destination is Washington, DC. Due to the difference in time zones, my options are very limited - the flights in to DC either arrive quite late in the evening (just before midnight), or else very early in the morning. I would prefer to arrive between noon and five pm. I really don't want to spend the early hours of the morning in an airport. I thought I could remedy this problem by flying in a day earlier, and then stopping over midway across the country. I could just book a room, spend the night, and then fly out to DC the next morning. This would probably help me get over my jet lag, too. Here's where I could use some suggestions - what would be the best city in which to stopover? I looked on the map for somewhere about halfway across; a workmate suggested Chicago, but I thought it would be too cold, or maybe even snowing there, in February. My neighbours suggested Houston, Dallas, and Atlanta as possibilities. However, none of them could provide any first-hand information. I'd appreciate suggestions as to what city to overnight in, as well as recommendations for inexpensive accommodations - because I am on a limited budget. I can't afford the Hilton, but I don't want to stay in a backpackers. Just a quiet and safe, yet inexpensive place to get cleaned up and rested - and preferably a motel with a free shuttle to the airport. Thanks in advance for your help! I know there are many people out there in the know, who will share their travel expertise... As far as the stopover - again this is just for clean up and sleeping - not for shopping or sightseeing. I've been to Las Vegas once, and aside from the neon, it doesn't really interest me. I'm a student so I don't have any $ for gambling or shows. I'm just mainly looking for a safe quiet place to have a shower and a rest before I head on to the East Coast. About the Chicago stopover - I've been watching the weather reports-brr! Will the ice and cold would be over by February? Or am I fooling myself? Both of my airlines options (ANZ or Qantas and their alliences) offer multi-stop trips, and also give discounts on hotels, Trying to find the right one with an airport shuttle, and without cockroaches will be the tricky bit. Looking at Dallas-Fort Worth or Houston as southern options, and Chicago or Indianapolis as northern options. BTW, I can flu directly into DCA, which is only about 12 Km from where I need to be. Any ideas on safe clean places to stopover? Thanks =)

Dallas or Denver. If you could stop in one other city though, you should stop in Las Vegas, NV. Just one night there you would love.

Despite the fact that it could be to be both mind & body numbingly cold Chicago [ORD ] is still your best bet and the reason is that unlike Dallas [DFW ] or Denver [DEN ] that are stuck out on the prairie miles away from the city center ORD is within Chicago proper, surrounded by it's suburbs . ORD is also well served by mass transit that makes getting places quick easy and cheap Here's the CTA site http://www.transitchicago.com/travel_information/maps/default.aspx Ten years ago when I lived in the Chicago suburb of LaGrange I used to take the PACE 330 bus to and from ORD Mannheim/LaGrange Road just has hotels & motels all up and down it http://www.pacebus.com/pdf/maps/330map.pdf You may want to post this question on the Chicago site to get more up -to -date info on possible lodging choices than I can provide you One more thing; In winter the weather at both DEN & especially DFW can actually be a lot worse than ORD Safe trip >>update As I'm thinking about your question I'm thinking that what your asking may in fact be impossible to do w/o booking LAX/SFO>ORD > IAD/DCA as 2 separate flights of LAX/SFO>ORD>LAX/SFO +ORD>IAD/DCA>ORD Usually the airlines won't let you do an over night stop mid-continent, TCB and then continue your flight the next morning update2 There is another possibility that's called a triangle fare so named b/c it's 3 separate legs that return you to where you started And it looks like this: LAX/SFO>ORD+ ORD>IAD/DCA+ IAD/DCA>LAX/SFO >>Update I searched the web for"Chicago O'Hare lodgong and came up with tons of stuff close to ORD http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=chicago+o%27hare+lodging&ei=UTF-8&fr=ks-ans&fr2=rs-bottom&rs=0&pstart=1&b=1 Here's another site .Look for anything within 6 miles of ORD http://www.airnav.com/reserve/hotel?near=KORD

DC and Philadelphia are both on the NYC-FL train route. The trains and buses from NYC to Toronto (Canada) and from Toronto to NYC both stop at Niagara Falls. There are also buses from Toronto to Detroit. So here's the route: 1. Bus or train or plane to Disney. 2. Bus or train or plane to Philadelphia. 3. Bus or train to New York. 4. Bus or train to Niagara Falls. 5. Bus or train to Toronto. 6. Bus or train to Detroit. 7. Airplane to DC.

What's the best way from NYC to Washington DC
What's the best way from NYC to Washington DC?
Hi! My family and I are making a combined NYC and Washington DC trip this coming April. We will arrive in New York and depart Washington Dc. Midway through the trip we need transportation from NYC to DC. What is the best way to do this? We do have bags we need to check. I figured that we take an 8.00 pm flight from Laguardia to National airport. This way we won't lose vacation time. The trains only seem to run in the morning. Your input will be appreciated!

The best/inexpensive way is by bus. I've used Greyhound Bus for a round trip from NYC to Washington, DC and it was very inexpensive. If you need to check luggage in NYC instead of tugging it along with you to Washington, DC, there are daily storage locations (which requires identification) here to help you for. Opening times are as early as 8am and close as late as 11pm http://411newyork.org/guide/2008/04/27/new-york-city-locker-storage/ Here are some tips that might be helpful for your trip. http://411newyork.org/guide/2008/03/13/things-to-bring-to-new-york-city/ Travel safe.

How about Amtrak?
3 :
you can try AMTRAK train but like you said they might not run at the time of day you were looking at try greyhound.com a well known bus company very popular, and they let you take luggage on with you, like a travellng tourist bus i guess look up JFK to DC and they should have some prices on there too

i suggest Mega Bus. its a new division i think of Coach Buses. if you book early the bus tickets only cost around 10 dollars. book really early and it'll be like 4. the buses to Washington are also really nice. its clean and i think the ones that go to Washington are double decker buses. the Mega Bus leaves from 32nd street right next to Madision Square Garden.

How far is the Baltimore Airport from Washington DC
How far is the Baltimore Airport from Washington DC?
Im going to visit my friend in DC soon and she said to try to book the flight to Reagan Airport , and to try to avoid Dulles and Baltimore, but if its a better deal to go for them. Well, Its sooo much cheaper to fly to Baltimore, but how would I get to DC? Is it relatively close? Also, how much will it cost to get there? Do they have shuttles? Should I just spend the $30 extra bucks to fly to Reagan or go with Baltimore?

BWI is about an hour away from DC by car, more if there is traffic. Using MARC or the metro bus shuttle would take at least 1.5 hrs. If the difference in price is only $30, I'd fly to DCA instead. It's so much easier.
2 :
I would spend the extra 30 dollars as you will probally end up spending the same getting from BWI to Downtown DC,here is all the info though The airport is approximately 8 miles south of Baltimore, Maryland and 35 miles north of Washington, D.C. Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Metro now offers BWI Express Metro bus service between BWI and the Greenbelt metro station. The service provides a direct connection between BWI and the Greenbelt Metro Station. The BWI Express/B30 service runs every 40 minutes, 7 days a week to the Greenbelt Metro Station, which is located on the Green Line of the Washington Metro System. Buses run 25 times each weekday and 21 times on Saturdays and Sunday, every 40 minutes. For more information call 202-637-7000 or go to www.wmata.com Catch the BWI Express from BWI Airport. There are two WMATA Bus Stops. One is located on the lower level of the International Concourse and the other stop is located on the lower level of Concourse A/B. The B30 will pick you up outside at the bus shelter. Follow the signs that say “Public Transit.†The Greenbelt Metro Station connects to Metro Stations throughout Washington, DC, Virginia, Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties. A route map and schedule is available now on Metro's website, www.wmata.com. In addition to the train service, there is frequent airport shuttle service to downtown Washington, D.C. and the surrounding areas. Washington DC Airport - Are they going to depart flights to London
Washington DC Airport - Are they going to depart flights to London?
Brother is leaving Atlanta, Georgia tomorrow. He's going to Washington and then to London. Does anyone know if Washington Airport are going to let the plane to London depart?

The airports in the United States have nothing to do with the decision. The decision to depart or not is up to the airlines and the airport in London. Currently the airport in London is closed but there is talk about reopening soon. Your brother will just have to call the airline of monitor their website.
2 :
It's possible but I wouldn't count on it. The European aviation regulators are the ones closing the airspace over Britain, not Washington Airport (by the way, its proper name is Dulles International Airport; Washington Airport is a smaller airport located closer to the District of Columbia which does not service International locations). They hope to allow 30% of normal European flights operate, but it's anyone's guess which 30% those will be. I would strongly recommend packing 3-4 nights worth of clothes in his carry-on bag and making arrangements for possible overnight stays. Many travellers are stranded in hotels close to the airport so he may have to look further out. I can say, if his flight IS cancelled, he may be stuck at Dulles for a week or more; the airlines are significantly backed up with people wanting to go home. So he should be prepared for anything.

Theres a flight in orbitz that makes you change airlines in japan and time between flight is 1 hour. if this is dangerously way too close why would they even sell this ticket? it doesnt say change plane, it says change airlines. im coming from Phillipines to airport NRT in tokyo and it says change airlines for the flight to Washington DC....remember its not change plane its change airlines, the airline change is from nippon to united

Yes, it's enough time, as long as your plane arrives on time!
2 :
Since it's just an international connecting flight 1 hour will be fine so long as your plane from the Phillipines isn't late (and if it is it's not a big problem, the airlines will help you get on the next possible flight). Both All Nippon and United are stationed in the Terminal 1-South area so I think 1hr is very doable.
3 :
If you are just changing gates you should be fine (if your plane isn't late). If you need to move your checked luggage around then its probably dangerous close.
4 :
It depends on certain factors, such as arriving and departing at/from the same terminal, having your bags checked all the way through (and the different airlines having an agreement to do it), the air traffic at the time you are flying as well as being on-time, etc. It is possible to make a connection within an hour if all goes well, but it is uncommon for different airlines to schedule a connection in so little a period. As to why they'd sell you such a ticket, it's because you are willing to buy it. Online places like Orbitz, Expedia, Travelocity, Priceline etc basically sell you the ticket, and as much as possible avoid doing anything more. If you need to change your flight date or anything the first thing they say is "call the airline", which is the wrong answer. Before an outbound departure any changes or refunds *must* be done by the issuing agency - since they issued the ticket in the first place. That doesn't stop their call center agents in India with fake English names from trying to dump you on the airlines though, making you wait on hold for 20-30 minutes just to have the airline say "the agent needs to do it". There's a good reason why they often refer to Travelocity as "Trouble City". In any case, you should call United and ask if an hour is a legal connection. If not, the agency is obligated to change it free of charge, since they sold it to you as a valid connection. Unless you want to assume the risk, but if you miss the connecting flight you are on your own.
5 :
if your airlines is late getting into japan and you miss your flight that airlines has to get you on a connecting flight to your destination, if it can't until the next day, they have to feed you and give you a hotel room. it happened to me with american airlines, in paris, i had to stay there two nights and almost 3 days all taken care for by american, i was going to israel, and the airport there is closed friday and saturday sabbat, lucked out great food nice rooms. your luggage will get to your flight so as soon as you get off your flight, find out where your connecting gate is and run

Try sidestep.com. Also check smarter travel.com. Each week they list which airlines are having sales. I know a few weeks ago British airways and air France had sales going on. Just keep looking, Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the best days to search because that's when most sales happen. Also expedia can alert you to price drops on selected routes.

Yeah. I've been doing some searching - it's difficult to find anything under $750 for that time period. You might do better bundling hotel and airfare. I managed to find a 5 nt trip London for two at under $750/pp by looking for air and hotel together. The airfare alone would have been more than $550/pp.

Easiest way get to Washington DC and back from Baltimore Airport
Easiest way get to Washington DC and back from Baltimore Airport?
I am traveling to DC for 1 day. I am landing at Baltimore airport at 9:30 in the morning and have an appointment in DC at 1:00pm with a return flight leaving at 8:30pm from Baltimore. Could someone tell me what are the best way to get back and forth is? I need to get to Massachusetts Ave which I was told is considered the NW area. Forgot to mention. It will be a Tuesday.

Go to the train station at the airport. Take the MARC train to Union Station in Washington. As to how to get to where you're going, Massachusetts Ave. NW is a pretty long street covering a number of miles. Go to www.wmata.com. Enter Union Station as your starting point. Enter the address for your ending point. The website will give you the choice of rail and bus to get you to your destination.
2 :
Just enter the information in the below URL and you can go to and from the Airport to your actual appointment. The express bus from the Airport to Greenbelt has gone up to $6.00. But the website will give you the entire cost. You might want to compare it with MARC. This is my help from Washington, D.C. United States of America. Please pick a "Best Answer", even if it is not mine. That way we can tell if we really do help people.
3 :
Take the bus. The B30. I took it myself this past March. Have some $1 bills ready. The bus will take you along the Baltimore-Washington Expressway into Greenbelt Station. Hop the Metro into DC and ask about Massachusetts Avenue. You're also good for all the area attractions. One thing about the Metro is that its good to read and maps while on the train, because the stations are so dark that you couldn't find a coin if it dropped in front of you. (DC Metro stations are designed that way. They look like a concert hall or theater.) Follow this link: http://www.bwiairport.com/en/travel/ground-transportation/trans/mta
4 :
MARC or Amtrak to Union Station. There's a shuttle bus that runs between the airport and train station. All you have to do is take the shuttle and take a train. If taking MARC, you'll want to check their schedule as they don't run in all directions all the time (their schedule can be pretty limited) and they also don't run on weekends. If taking Amtrak, you may wish to buy a ticket in advance. Amtrak's website: http://www.amtrak.com MARC's website: http://mta.maryland.gov/services/marc/?PHPSESSID=de19a79e532ea8b09f46fdf71867fb77 Union Station is on Massachusetts Avenue. Technically it's at 50 Massachusetts Avenue NE. You may be able to walk to your destination or it may be too far. Use Google Maps to get directions. You can also either take the bus, metro, taxi, or walk. Metro's website (metro and bus): http://www.wmata.com
5 :
Your first choice should be the Marc train. It will take you to union station which on Mass Ave. The shuttle from the airport will take you to the train station where you can catch the marc train. If you are coming during the weekend the Marc does not run so your best option would be the B30 bus to greenbelt. From there hop on the metro. Mass ave is very long and not walkable. Check metro's website to see exactly where you need to go.

My girlfriend and I want to fly to Europe CHEAP
My girlfriend and I want to fly to Europe CHEAP?
What is the cheapest way to get to Europe? We need a vacation. I have had good luck with Travel Zoo in the past, but i can seem to find flight from Washington DC to any city in Europe for less than $600. What is the cheapest way to fly to Europe. We don't even care what city we go to, Rome, Paris Brussels, Prague.... WHERE EVER, we just need a break. Is there any way to get to Europe for less than $500???

It's been years since I saw flights between Europe and the US for less than $500 (and even then, it was only an occasional special deal between major cities). $600 is more reasonable from DC, and I honestly don't think you'll find anything for less. Try a comparison site like Skyscanner or Momondo. Skyscanner lets you search from DC to anywhere in the world, for a month at a time. Here's DC to various countries in October: http://www.skyscanner.net/flights-from/iad/october-2009/october-2009/cheapest-flights-from-washington-dulles-in-october-2009.html The listed prices may only be for certain dates, so if your schedule isn't flexible, you'll need to change the search parameters.
2 :
Elizabeth is right. $600 IS cheap. The prices are down from the peak travel period in the summer and at Christmas, you'd be lucky to find anything under $1000. When I flew to/from Dulles in August the price was around $800 round trip from Amsterdam. My daughter was here in Italy for the first few weeks in September. She flew with Air France via Paris to get to Bologna because it was the best deal from Dulles when she was flying. The one budget airline that operates flights out of Dulles to Europe is Aer Lingus who flies to Dublin. However, even that is 209 euro each way which puts you right around $600 per person. http://www.aerlingus.com/cgi-bin/obel01im1/bookonline/index.jsp

Try travelocity maybe. It will cheaper from NYC I think. There is NYC TO LON direct flight from Kuwait Airways which is cheap and then try easyjet and ryan air in europe. JFK Airport, Transit Flight?
Hi, I have a flight from Europe to NY with Delta Air line, one and half hour later I have another flight with same Air line to Washington DC. now I just want to know that, is there any cheking passport in JFK or not? beaus I'm worry to miss my flight to DC! thanks

Yes, your passport will be checked at New York as its your first point of arrival in the U.S. There's no way around this. And generally, you sould allow a minimum of 2 hours for connecting from international to domestic flights - even on the same airline. All sorts of things can delay you - immigration, customs, baggage, etc., etc.
2 :
you generally have to collect your bags, go through passport control/customs, and recheck your bag... standard international arrivals procedure. you may have to change terminals, too. 1.5 hours should be enough time, but it does not allow a lot of time to spare. But your airline should be understanding on this, too - if you don't make it, they'll have to put you on the next flight.

Washington and Washington DC..Air ports and flights
Washington and Washington DC..Air ports and flights?
There's like two Washington's on the map. There's a Washington then there's like a Washington DC. Is the white house in DC and is WA DC an actual state? Please explain in simple language lol I'm not that smart..And lets say my mom and I live in NY. But we went to the Albany airport..Would we able to like book a flight all the way to WA (Not wa dc but just wa) or would we like need to make several stops at different states and travel on diff planes from diff air ports?

Washington DC is where the white house is. "DC" stands for District of Columbia; it not technically a state, but has all the 'features of a state ...government, police, driver licensing etc. It is only a few hundred miles from Albany. There is non-stop air service from Albany to Washington DC. Washington state is on upper west coast of our country North of California and Oregon, It's about 3,000 miles from Albany. Depending upon which airline you choose, you will have at least one stop from Albany to Seattle (Washington state's capitol) and will have to change to another plane wherever the stop is.. You would not change airports. The most likely cities where a stop would be (depending on the airline chosen) would be Newark, NJ, Philadelphia, PA, Chicago, IL or Detroit MI. RJ

What are the odds of a plane crash to Washington DC?
im going to Washington DC tomorrow and i just wanna know what the chances of the plane crashing are. Also how long is the flight? im from LA and ive never been to DC. im not a big fan on flying. help!

Probably the same as a plane crash anywhere else. As for the duration of your flight, it should be on your boarding pass, but it typically takes about five hours between L.A. and either Dulles (in Virignia) or BWI (near Baltimore, Maryland). Remember D.C. is three hours ahead of L.A., which is why it looks like eight hours.
2 :
I would relax about the plane thing. About zero. Though odds of getting stabbed on the ground or killed in a car wreck once there are pretty decent.
3 :
You are far more likely to crash while in your car getting to the airport than you are while on the plane. Don't worry about it.

Time taken & how to get from Terminal 4 in Heathrow to Terminal 1 as well as connecting flights
Time taken & how to get from Terminal 4 in Heathrow to Terminal 1 as well as connecting flights?
Hi, I'm travelling from Kuala Lumpur to London to Washington DC, with a connection flight at Heathrow. My flight will be landing at Terminal 4 and my United air flight to DC will be at Terminal 1. I was wondering how long it would take and how to get from Terminal 4 to Terminal 1. And also, in the case that I have to check in again, would I have to go through the whole customs and immigration checks at Terminal 4 or 1?

It will depend if you have one ticket issued with both your MH flight and UA flight together or is your MH flight on one ticket and your UA flight is on another. In any case, you would need to get MH to check through your bags from KUL to IAD with connection in London by showing the check-in agent your onward connection on UNITED AIRLINES.If that is the case, then you do not need to go through immigration and customs in London. You just need to proceed to "Flight Connections" where you will first go through security, and then to the Transfer Desk to check in for your United Airlines flight. When you check in , you will be asked if you have baggage and you will show them the tag that MH gave you. The check in agent will put in the information before giving you your boarding pass. Then you go to the Transfer Area to take a bus from Terminal 4 to Terminal 1. Ideally you would need at least 90 mins for this through transfer. If MH refuses to through check your bags to Washington.. (which is highly unlikely), then you would need to clear immigration at Terminal 4, collect your bags, and then go to the Heathrow express train station under the Terminal. There take the Heathrow Express to Heathrow Central (ie Terminal 1 & 3). This is a FREE service between terminals and you do not need to buy a ticket as long as you get off at the next station. There you will proceed to Terminal 1 check-in where you will check in for your UNITED flight. This transfer would require at least 2-2.5 hours to do. But like I said, it is highly likely that you would need to do this as I know MH would oblige to check your bag through. ============ HOWEVER, the return might be a different matter.... If you are returning with UNITED AIRLINES and transferring to MH in London again, UNITED AIRLINES *may* refuse to through check you to KUL if you do not hold ONE ticket. ie both your UA and MH flights are on one ticket. UNITED AIRLINES has been known to do this - if you hold seperate reservations. You may always try asking.. but do not argue with them if they say no. Hope this helps.

What affordable apartments are extremely close to Washington DC Dulles airport
What affordable apartments are extremely close to Washington DC Dulles airport?
Hello all! I'm a new flight attendant whom will be relocating to DC and I want to know what areas are a really close commute via train to the airport. Thanks :)

well i would recommend Arlington, its nice there. apartments are not cheap in the dc area. You'd be lucky if you get a small one bedroom for around $800
2 :
Jen is a little off there. As you probably know, Arlington is nowhere near Dulles and your job requires you to be at the airport pretty quickly and living in Arlington is not going to make it for you. There is no train from DC to Dulles Airport; only bus or taxi. Probably your best bets are to live in Dulles Greene Apartments or Archstone Dulles. They may be rather pricey compared to what you may be used to, but both are very nice. There are other places close by as well in Herndon, Sterling or Ashburn, but those two are the best. You can be at Dulles from Dulles Greene in less than 15 minutes...with traffic. http://www.dullesgreene.com/home.html http://www.archstoneapartments.com/Apartments/Virginia/Reston-Herndon/Archstone_Dulles/
3 :
Are you sure you will ONLY be flying in and out of Dulles? Make sure...as each airport is some distance from each other. Your best bet is to hook-up with some other flight attendants. They generally rent apartments in different cities where they may have layovers. It's not the best living condition, but it sure beats paying $1,500 a month for an apartment that you maybe only get to sleep in 4 days a week. Better to share an apartment or a townhouse with other like-minded people and pay only $400 a month. I used to live in Sterling, Virgnia. Lots of flight attendants rented homes and townhomes in that area. Sterling is generally cheaper than Reston or Herndon...and relatively close to Dulles Airport.

What does economy mean for an airplane
What does economy mean for an airplane?
We are going on an almost 4 hour flight to washington dc and it says the plane is economy...what does this mean? is it anymore special than a regular plane? oh ok.....................
Air Travel - 5 Answers

1 :
That just means you are in economy class which is what most people are in. It means you didn't pay a lot of extra money to get better service, etc.
2 :
It sounds like you will be in a standard plane, just in the "economy" section which is basically standard seating.
3 :
Economy class is the lowest class of seating in air travel and also have cheapest fare. Although it is reputed to be uncomfortable, with limited legroom and amenities, it is favored by many travelers as it offers the cheapest seats.
4 :
It's basically Coach seating, as opposed to First Class.
5 :
Economy means that you got a place where most people choose and usually economy ticket prices are the cheapest. There are 3 types of classes in the airlines 1. First Class 2.Business Class 3.Economy Class Some airlines may have a different name for these classes and some planes do not have all og the 3 classes. Most of the airlines and aircrafts have all the classes but some do not have.

whats the likeliness of flight delay flying out frm IAD (washington DC) around JAnuary?
What is the likeliness of flight being delay at IAD around January? had anyone here ever been delayed at IAD around the time of early january? due to storm, blizzard, etc? if you did, how long was the delay and when exactly was it (date)...cuz i have a flight going frm IAD to PDX by United Airline...and im really worry about the flight being delay since i will arrive at PDX frm IAD around 840pm and i have a flight flying out frm PDX to LAX the following morning at 1030am...so i'm worry that if my flight is delay i will miss my morning flight to LAX.. i alrdy booked. it..and did thought about it until now :\ i cant really change my flight now huh? cuz i bought it on Tuesday. hahha yes there is...i'm not suppose to go to JAX...but my family dont know ...so im sneaking away for a few days. >.< therefore i have to be back on time for my flight back to LAX from PDX (i'm suppose to stay in Portland the whole week..but im not. ) lol

If your worried book an earlier flight, a day earlier, hour, but yeah don't risk it if your this worried. Book earlier.

Any flight can be delayed for a number of reasons. Weather, mechanical, etc. There is no guessing what will happen. That being said, you have a 14 hour connection time!!!! Your chances of misconnecting on that are slim to none! The only way you wouldn't make it would be if the flight canceled for some reason or another. If that happens, ask them to put you on a direct flight from IAD-LAX. That's quite the strange itinerary that you have. Is there a reason for the stop in PDX????

flights for toronto to washington dc
flights for toronto to washington dc?
We want to flight from toronto to washing dc but one person in are group does not like flying in small jets and has said he will not fly in anything smaller than a 737. Does anyone know if there is an airline that operates a service with a 737 or larger?

I'm not aware of any airlines flying between Toronto and the northeastern part of the US using anything larger than a regional jet -- this is true not only for the nonstop flights between YYZ and Washington or Baltimore, but also for flights to other nearby cities, such as New York or Philadelphia. Your friend will either need to find an alternative method to make this trip, find a nearby airport in the US from which to fly that may have mainline jet service to New York (such as Detroit), or he will have to find an itinerary that involves mainline jet service through another city. (American mainline service, for example, can be used to fly from Toronto to Washington via either Los Angeles or Dallas, but keep in mind that both of these itineraries are likely to be extremely expensive, as they will likely require the purchase of two fares.)
2 :
no, only served by Embraer 175, Dash 8-100, Embraer 145, Train. :-)
3 :
Not that I know of. Personally, I'd rather fly in a relatively new Embraer jet than in an old 737 that's past it's prime any day.

I need a flight going from Washington DC (out of DCA, IAD, or BWI) going to Denver on May 8. Should I buy now or wait?

Buy as soon as your dates are confirmed, it's expected more people will be traveling and oil prices would go up later, therefore prices could only go up.
2 :
Buy now. The next threshold is 21 days before departure date. Then 14 days. Please check: Tips: a- use flexible dates b- use alternative airports http://www.hotwire.com/ http://www.cheapoair.com/ http://www.kayak.com/ http://www.orbitz.com/ http://www.priceline.com/ http://www.expedia.com/default.asp http://www.farecompare.com/ http://www.bing.com/travel/ http://www.airfarewatchdog.com/ http://www.cheapair.com/

Traveling to Puerto Rico for new years from LAX....Is my flight going out of domestic or international?
ok so im going to visit some friends in San Juan Puerto Rico this new years and I leave in about 2 weeks, I leave here from Los Angeles LAX and have 1 connecting flight in Washington DC, so I know that from LA to DC its a domestic flight so I stay on that terminal but what about from DC to PR??? is that still domestic or how does that work....? passports are mandatory for travel after Jan 2008 no? kool so its domestic still right? Im flying Delta

Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States, and as such is PART of the United States...therefore , it is a domestic flight and no passport is needed. Just like flying to Alaska por Hawaii...same goes for Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
2 :
Charlie is dead wrong about Alaska and Hawaii. Theses are BOTH states of the US. Number 49 and 50 respectively Puerto Rico, Guam, US Virgin are NOT states of US but are US possessions. (territories) You still fly domestically. to P.R.
3 :
Passports were needed for going by air and returning as of January 2007 in US, Canada, Mexico Caribbean & Bermuda. In Summer 2008 is when it is required for travel by Land and Sea. No you don't need a passport, but you should already have one, especially if you are flying. What happens if the plane needs an emergency stop somewhere? You will be screwed if that happens.
4 :
It sounds as though you are flying United Airlines. UA has a hub in Washington Dulles and your gate will most likely begin with the letter C or D. No terminal transfer is likely so it will not be like LAX where sometimes you change terminals. The United terminal at IAD is a long terminal. Just look at the airport in the Hemispheres in-flight magazine. Yes the flight to Puerto Rico should be domestic since PR is US territory.

Traveling by plane from Baku, Azerbaijan to DC! advice
Traveling by plane from Baku, Azerbaijan to DC! advice?
My poor cat is going to move to Washington DC with us. Which means a 5 hour flight to Frankfurt, a 4 hour lay over there, then a 8 hour flight to Washington DC where we will have temporary housing that allows cats. It's an extremely stressful trip but this is the only way to get her there. We decided since I have such a good bond with her and Baku has so many stray cats she'll be better off with us. -I have a soft carrier that she likes and is approved by the airline -should I bring food/water/kitty litter? How can she go to the bathroom? -Should I giver her catnip/toys in her carrier? -Should I buy a harness and leash train her? What type of harness is best? -Any tips for preparing her/keeping her calm in the plane? Thank!

Speak to your vet and they will give you all the advice you need to know about making sure your cat is comfortable traveling by air. And they can offer advice on sedation as with some animals this is the only way they can travel.
2 :
you should withhold the food. do not feed her too much. not very experienced in flying with cats. you can contact a cat courier to transport.

1 :
you would have to check with the airlines for that. they have the schedules, don't ya know!!
2 :
go on priceline or obtiz and see wht they say
3 :
No, not on a commercial airliner. The Orange County airport is not a major hub and doesn't have flights coming in from the east coast. You'll have to connect through an airport like Chicago O'Hare or Dallas. Your other option is to be very rich and charter a private jet which will fly you from anywhere to anywhere.
4 :
There are no airlines which offer non stop flights from IAD to SNA, but there are tons with only one stop. United seems to fly through Denver which seems like it would be directly in line with where you are heading!
5 :
I believe that United still has one daily. If it were me, I'd drive a few miles up 405 to the Long Beach Airport and go nonstop on jetBlue. They have GREAT fares, the free seat back television, and a ton of nonstops to Dulles Airport from LGB. Indeed UAL no longer has the nonstop. So, you either have to connect or travel from LAX or LGB. My money's still on jetBlue from Long Beach.
6 :
No, the only two flights from IAD to SNA have one stop: United 491 stops in Denver Delta 1095 stops in Atlanta (plane change also, even when it keeps the same flight number) DCA and BWI flights to SNA also have 1 stop. =0) Good luck
7 :
Who cares about one-stops... for all intents and purposes it's the same as a connection. The shortest flight time is on US Airways via PHX, about a 6hr45min flight from BWI or IAD. There are others that are around 7 hrs total. But no, no directs. Closest is jetBlue to LGB, like someone said.

Budget Hotels in Washington DC
Budget Hotels in Washington DC?
I have an early flight out of DC and I will need a cheap hotel for 1 night in a safe area near DC and within a 1/2 hour driving access to reagan airport. Any suggestions where I should look? Just need it to be pretty cheap.

If you are interested in being in the city, the Hotel Harrington has rooms starting arounc $100 a night. If you need even cheaper than that, I recommend you check out the Arlington cemetary/Iwo Jima area. There are a number of Quality Inns and the like in that area with prices in the $80 a night range. You could also check in the area of Crystal City, the Americana Hotel is one that usually has good rates. These are excellent rates for DC - note that it will be essentially impossible to do better than $70 a night or so within a half hour of Reagan Airport. Comments on the other note - the Days Inn in DC is not in a good neighborhood, and there are few in the VA suburbs. There is an excellent Red Roof In downtown in the Chinatown area, but rooms start at $120 a night.
2 :
Suggest any Days Inn or Red Roof Inn...they are cheap and plentiful in the area.

YOu go to Heathrow or Gatwick

London Luton Airport only does flights to Europe. You'd probably have to go to Heathrow. From there take the Underground to St Pancras (this is direct - no changes), and a train to Luton from there. Or you might get a flight to Gatwick, from where you get a train to Victoria, the Underground to St Pancras (again this is direct on the Victoria line) and a train to Luton. The way to research this is to look up the Washington DC airport web site, see from the timetables what airlines go to London, then use the web sites for those airlines to see what you can get. Go through the booking process then stop when you get quoted prices. The pricing model means it's usually cheapest to book 2 months before you go. Or try expedia, but always look on the airline's on web site once you find the best deal to see if they are selling the same flights cheaper. I've found that's true sometimes. Experiment. Fares can vary a lot between different days in the week and different times of day. The cheapest will always be the overnight "red-eye" - mind you, most east-west transatlantic flights go overnight. It ensures one-way traffic across the ocean and therefore safety - coming back they go during the day. Budget airlines don't do long flights like this - it will be about 8 hours. So it will have to be a full-service airline and you will get served 2 meals on the way - on an overnight flight, dinner and breakfast.

You can fly to Heathrow,Gatwick or Stansted airports. Gatwick is easiest as there is a direct frequent rail service from Gatwick to Luton. From Stansted you would need to take a bus to Luton or travel by train via London. From Heathrow you take the Underground (Subway) to Kings Cross St Pancras and then a train from St Pancras to Luton www.nationalrail.co.uk Cheap flights are really a thing of the past unless you are travelling during a very off peak period. Rising fuel prices and the losses sustained by major airlines have forced prices up. Consult a good local travel agent or go to the websites of the major transatlantic airlines like BA, American and United

My question: New Jersey is pretty close to Washington DC, So why fly? Isn't land travel any fun at all? Doesn't the AMTRAK train go there from NYC or Philly? Airplanes are used way too much for transportation. Just earlier today a Brazilian airliner hit a gas staton and blew up killing more than 200 people.. I never use airplanes unless crossing a huge body of water, and even then I'd use a ship if they were available.. Land travel is INTERESTING, anyway, albeit always less convenient.
2 :
you can call your airline carrier and they have automated flight information that can be emailed to you, phoned to your home or cell phone. call your carrier. they will alert you of any changes asap. you can also go online and check the status of your flight by typing in your flight number at your airlines carrier website.
3 :
It may not be cancelled, but it could be severely delayed and put you up against a long frustrating day. I would also recommend Amtrak if it's not a financial burden to pay for another ticket. If you don't use your airline ticket you can have it reissued for another trip and pay an additional $25-$50 to do so. The time frame is usually within one year. A round trip from Newark, which is probably closest, is $190 and takes 3 hours. You can arrive 10-15 minutes before your train leaves, and print your internet reservations from a ticketing kiosk at the station. Also you'll arrive at Union Station in the heart of DC so you won't have to worry about getting into the city...

Washington DC Airport Question
Washington DC Airport Question?
Hi everyone.. I'm flying from Greensboro to DC next Thursday, then getting on a connecting flight from DC to San Francisco. However, my flight from Greensboro lands in DC at 7:40 AM, and my connecting flight takes off at 8:30 AM.. Will I have enough time to exit the plane and get to my next terminal for my next flight? It seems like that's cutting it pretty close, considering it takes a while for people to leave the plane, and I'd then have to find my terminal, and they begin to board 30 minutes before take off. Any info? Thanks.

No problem if you are using Ronald Reagan National airport. Again no problem at BWI. Sorry do not know about Dulles, but probably no problem especially if you do not arrive late. Please pick a "Best Answer", even if it is not mine. That way we can tell if we really do help people.
2 :
The typical terminal for an airline has 1 dozen to 20 gates sometimes the stewardess will announce the connecting gates. I don't see any problem shouldn't take more than 10 minutes.
3 :
There are 3 airports that are considered part of the DC area-- WAS is the code of all of these Washington area airports. They are: BWI - Baltimore Washington International (in Maryland) IAD - Dulles (in Northern VA) DCA - Reagan (actually in DC) Since you're traveling domestic you'll be staying in the same terminal. So your exit gate will, at least most likely be in the same building as your next gate. When you check into the airport in Greensboro you might want to see if they already know what gate your connecting flight will be leaving from at your destination. I've linked three maps below for each of the Washington area airport's. If you're that concerned, whichever one you'll be connecting through, you could print out the map and that way know exactly where you're going when you land once you know your gate. If you were traveling internationally it might be a different story, but I really think you should be fine. I've actually made connections tighter than that having to pick up and recheck luggage, go through customs and switch terminals. Nerve racking as anything and better to avoid, but you can still get where you need to be. If your first flight gets delayed or you're concerned ask for help, ideally from someone from your airline if you think you might not make it. They can call ahead to your plane and tell them that you're there and to wait. But also, even if you do miss your flight, they'll just put you on the next one at no cost to you. Once you have your boarding pass, they have to get you there. I hope that helps. Good luck! And have a great trip.
4 :
That is cutting it close and the answer may depend on which airport---I'm assuming Ronald Reagan National (DCA). If that's the case there should be no problem. You can go online and check the airport site for where the gates are in relation to each other---it may be just a short walk fr gate to gate.

Can I get on a connecting flight
Can I get on a connecting flight ?
Here is my dillema: I want to travel from Washington, DC to Greenville, SC. The tickets from DC to Greenville are like $300, but If I book them from Harrisburg, PA they are $100, but do connect from DC. My question is if I get a ticket, can I get the flight from DC and fly to Greenville,SC? If possible at all. Thanks to all of you that can help me. EDIT: To make it easier: PA -> DC -> SC $100 DC -> SC $300 Can I just skip the PA -> DC, and just get on the connection DC -> SC and still pay the $100 ticket?

It sounds like you can answer that yourself, if you need a better system check expedia.com, put in your cities and press enter they will give you alternate routes/airports on the left hand side, sorry i'd do it for you ..but it's too much cut and paste http://www.expedia.com Good luck

No, you won't be able to do that. When you give the gate agent your boarding pass on the first leg of your trip it checks you into the rest of the legs. If you do not board the first leg, your reservation will be canceled and your seat given to anyone who is flying standby or non-rev. If you want to take advantage of the lower fare, you will need to board the fight in PA.

If you do not show up in Harrisburg for the intial flight- the airline wioll cancel you from DC to Greeneville- I know it's crazy- I 've worked for the airlines for 8 years and have never figured out how it works. You must be flying thru a hub- are you flying US Airways or United? I guess if you book a ticket thru DC they just assume if you aren't making the first flight you are not making the second- shop around some more- maybe go from DC to Atlanta back to Greenville on Delta or Airtran- may be just as cheap- good luck!

The closest location to Atlanta would be Orlando (6-7 hour drive from Atlanta), followed by Washington DC (which is about a 9 hour drive), then Miami.
3 :
Know that closest doesn't necessarily mean cheapest, if that's why you're asking. Popular routes tend to have better deals.... (but the closest -- by a few hours -- is Orlando, FL)
4 :
Orlando is the closest at 7 hours driving time. Washington DC would be next at 10 hours. Open up Google Maps and take a look for yourself.

912 Tea Party March on Washington DC, on 9/12 2009
912 Tea Party March on Washington DC, on 9/12 2009?
A friend of mine and I aren't talking anymore since we don't view things the same. Well the way I see it he won't talk to me. I emailed him with a response to a nasty email .. 'would you still have negative things to say had Mccain gotten in office, because it seems no matter what everyone can't all be satisfied at the same time. Changes have to be made for other reasons we may not all know. I am sure every option in Washington is being considered. Obama is just human not a saint that will answer and satisfy every human being. And no matter who had won America was already in debt and on its way more whom ever gotten in office. Changes have to be made because what we've been doing hasn't worked in a long time. He sends me this: A friend of mine went to this and I really wanted to go but couldn't he wrote me about the experience... "What was it like?" Well, Susan and I got up at 4:00AM and drove to the Airport for a 7:25AM flight to DC. Imagine our surprise as we met six people on the shuttle from a satellite parking lot to the airport that were on the same flight as us and for the same reason. Even more astonishment as we met many others at the gate also going for the march. About 90% of the flight was going to the march and 30 more were on standby. Most of them could not get a seat. We arrived at DCA about 8:45AM and made our way to Metro which is the rapid transit system in Washington. We could barely get on the train!! By the second stop of 7 to the Federal Triangle station no more people could board and we were packed in to the rafters. The people of Georgia were the first in line as we registered more participants than any other state. We arrived at 9:20 AM and found our state flag only five minutes before the march began. Georgia had already been pushed 1 1/2 blocks down Pennsylvania Avenue from Freedom Plaza. (Start of March) Florida and Texas were close behind us and all 50 states were represented. As we made our way down Pennsylvania Avenue the dominant chant was "can you hear us now?" A direct question to government representatives. We entered the west central lawn of the Capital which rapidly filled. The north and south side lawns filled just as quickly. We were up close to the front and were being pushed against the fence as the overcrowding began. Capital Police closed the gates and started directing people to the mall area from the reflecting pool about 200 yards from the capital to the Washington Monument about 1 mile away. It took three hours for all participants to march down Pennsylvania Avenue and FILL the mall area. The crowd estimate from ABC News was announced at 1.5 million people!! We spoke with Capital Police who stated it was the largest crowd they had ever seen and estimated the crowd on the lawn(s), mall and sidewalks still attempting to enter the mall at 3 million. 450 buses lined Madison Avenue past the Washington Monument. Hundreds of thousands were already in Washington with tens of thousands more trying to drive in on gridlocked interstates (This was on Saturday!!). Tens of thousands more (including myself) had flown in from all over the country. The METRO system was completely overwhelmed and tens of thousands walked for miles just to get to Freedom Plaza and participate. After the singing of the National Anthem the roar was so loud I felt the reverberation through my body!!! After listening to many great speakers and being entertained with great songs, Susan and I left at 2:30 PM to make our way back through the sea of humanity. Security Guards were stationed at the top of the escalator descending to the loading platform in "All Metro Stations" to prevent injury of people coming down the escalator to an overcrowded loading platform. We arrived at the gate for boarding at 4:52PM for a 5:00PM departure. Remember it is only 7 stops from the Federal Triangle to Regan International. If folks staying in Washington and locals had not pushed us to the front of the line we would not have made our flight!!! (Thanks to all of them) I have many great photos of this event and will send some later. The message has been delivered to Washington that the majority of folks in this country are not just fighting a bad bill, "We Are Fighting Socialism". Later Nathan * Now how do you respond to this so called friend? I am really frustrated with him.

70,000? Are you that quick to let the LIBERALS spoonfeed you that horseshit? I saw one block that had more than that on it. Way more. As to the QA's question, respond with however you see fit, but I don't get what you're mad about. Are you mad he rubbed in going and you couldn't?

Well, for one thing, many of the pictures and videos being show on tv are from previous marches, not the 9/12 march. And this is known to be true because those pictures do not have buildings which have been in the sites shown since 2004. And others show cranes in front of the Smithsonian which were in place in the 1990s and haven't been there since. Now did your friends need to get government permission or show papers giving them the right to cross state lines? Were they prevented from assembling in the March in DC or voicing their opposition? Were they arrested or beaten by government security agents for carrying signs that were offensive to the President? What is their definition of Socialism? It seems that these people want to continue with the status quo and allow the insurance companies to dictate what sort of treatment the patients can or cannot receive. Let the insurance companies continue to deny people coverage because of preexisting conditions or when they don't want to pay for a medical procedure, find some stupid thing that they can claim that the patient 'lied' about and drop their coverage. Or loosing one's insurance when they lose their job. Then there's all the people who are currently uninsured. The taxpayer is the one who ends up paying for those people when they need emergency medical treatment. This bill is trying to rectify this matter. Yes, there may be some questionable things in it. But, this is were the Republicans in Congress should work together with the Democrats to debate and iron out those things. I have a life threatening preexisting condition that would not be covered if I had to change insurances. And I was told, by an insurance company that they determined I know longer have a back problem because of the payments they had made to my doctor. That was over 20 yrs ago and I have had to pay for my therapy out of pocket since just to be able to keep walking. I would love to be able to get on an insurance plan that would not penalize me because of that preexisting condition or the fact that my back problem was cutting into their profit margin.

ABC said 70,000. Our GOP bloggers tried to lie and inflate the number. Michigan has 40,000 more per college football game.
2 :
70,000? Are you that quick to let the LIBERALS spoonfeed you that horseshit? I saw one block that had more than that on it. Way more. As to the QA's question, respond with however you see fit, but I don't get what you're mad about. Are you mad he rubbed in going and you couldn't?
3 :

Will hurricane Bill affect my flight from Hartford to DC to Copenhagen
Will hurricane Bill affect my flight from Hartford to DC to Copenhagen?
I am flying on Sunday evening from Hartford to Washington DC, then on to Copenhagen Denmark. I see the path of hurricane Bill may affect the flight. This is new for me-is there any chance my flight will be delayed or canceled???

Anything is possible. Impossible to predict accurately four days away.
2 :
Bill will not have any impact on Copenhagen, and there is only a very slight chance it will have any impact on Harford, and less chance for DC. I base this on 5-day scientific probabilities for hurricane Bill here: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at3+shtml/083316.shtml?tswind120#contents At 72 hours (Sunday) the chart indicates a 5-10 percent chance of 39mph winds in Hartford caused by Bill. That appears to be the maximum risk along your flight path, and the risk is very, very low. Your flight would probably go as planned even with 39mph winds at Hartford. It is more likely your DC-Copenhagen pilots will take an alternate route across the Atlantic, i.e., fly around the hurricane. But you're good to go. Pack your bags.
3 :
It might become a problem, Bill is heading in the direction of DC. As it is still 3 days from now, you might keep an eye on this map every now and then and see if the direction changes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:2009_Atlantic_hurricane_season_summary_map.png (p.s the red one is Bill)
4 :
As the other answers say, Bill is still a long way off and exactly what path it will take is unknown. Note that airports do NOT wait until the last moment to close. The airport authorities decide when to close (not the airlines). You need to keep watching the news and watch the airlines' website(s). If Bill begins to threaten the east coast you also need to call the airline to ask about changes (don't depend on the website to be updated more than once a day). If Bill does disrupt flights the airlines will rebook you on another flight - either earlier or later, or maybe via a different route (if that works). However, they won't change flights for free until the airlines' management OKs doing so. Be flexible and consider leaving early if your tickets/fare will allow. For example, if Bill threatens the Boston-Washington corridor then both of your airports may be affected. Remember there are flights to Copenhagen from other US cities, including Chicago. If Washington is affected you may still be able to get from Hartford to somewhere else with flights to Copenhagen.
5 :
Yes, your flight will be delayed. Bill will be near Boston Sunday as a CAT 1-2 Hurricane. Take an early morning flight to DC or get out before Sunday. There is a good chance Hartford could get a lot of flooding, and wind damage from this storm.
6 :
its possible, look at the raidar

Arlington Cemetery, The Viet Nam Wall Memorial, Iwo Jima...Drive around that and it looks like they are raising the American flag...very touching!
2 :
Pick one of the Smithsonian museums on the Mall or the National Gallery of Art. Depending on your interests one of them will easily fill out your day and they all have easy metro access. I'm assuming you're flying through Reagan National and not Dulles. If you're going through Dulles there's a new Air and Space Museum annex out there. You'll never get into town and back from Dulles.
3 :
Smithsonian Air and Space Museum-the most popular museum in DC. Full of replicas of aircrafts and spaceships National Museum of Natural History Union Station-full of many shops, restaurants, and a movie theater (you won't have enough time for a movie) This is about all you'll see in DC but you'll still have fun
4 :
Depends on which airport you're flying in and out of. If its reagan then I'd say to definitely get down to the mall (the smithsonian metro stop) and just walk around there for awhile. You'll see monuments and memorials, etc. But if you're flying from BWI or dulles, I'm not sure you'll have enough time with traffic and other tourist traps, etc. Enjoy!
5 :
If you are going through Reagan, hop on the metro (blue line towards Largo) and get off at the Smithsonian stop. It will put you on the National Mall - close to the Smithsonian museums and the monuments. I prefer the monuments over the museums and you can easily spend a couple of hours walking around to all of the monuments and the Capital building on the mall.
6 :
wow.. 5 hours is definitely not a lot of time to see such a great place.. and if your at the washington reagan airport your in DC but way on the other side... i wouldnt suggest leaving the airport with so little time.. however if you must.. i would go and see the whitehouse.. and take pictures and stuff its pretty cool.. there are tons of museums but you really need a lot of time to look at everything.. looking at one will take about 2/3 hours min. and your gonna need 30/45 mins to travel from the airport to the heart of DC.. which is where all the stuff is.

You are very unlikely to be able to get back to the US on either of those dates for $500. And it will not help you to travel around Europe, which will cost significant amounts of money itself.

wow, that wasn't too wise to go to europe and not buy a return tix!! there is no way to get one for UNDER $500!!! that was like 5-6 yrs ago that you could get tix this cheap!!!

If you go to one of the travel websites and input your info, you'll get a list of flights. I'd guess it's about three hours, depending on which airport in DC you use.
2 :
Depends on the airlines you fly with. If you fly with no stop (US Airways or Continental Airlines), the flight will take about 3 hours. If you fly with AirTran Airways (which will stop at Atlanta, GA), the trip duration will be less than 5 hours.

Check it out on Yahoo travel, I use them to find flights, choose the one I want then i buy it directly from the airline. Do it as soon as you can as the price goes up the closer you get to your travel date. Depending on the airline it will cost around $25 for the first checked bag, more for the second and you don't want to think about a third one. Carry on is free.

Where in Spain will you be flying from Ok so Barca http://www.metwashairports.com/dulles/874.htm There appears to be no direct flights to day are there normally direct flights
2 :
When it was snowing in DC, many planes were delayed, re-routed, etc. causing them to be in the wrong positions for the next flights. It can take several days to get all of the planes back at the correct airports and back on schedule.
3 :
This can be because the destination from which the aircraft is flying from can have delays or your destination airport can have delays.
4 :
If there were a lot of cancellations, the airlines have to reposition aircraft and get gate space as well. It takes awhile to sort out when a big snow storm hits.

If there were a lot of cancellations, the airlines have to reposition aircraft and get gate space as well. It takes awhile to sort out when a big snow storm hits.

My flight comes back from Guatemala to Washington DC, changing planes in Atlanta
My flight comes back from Guatemala to Washington DC, changing planes in Atlanta...?
Ok, I'm flying to Guatemala from Washington DC, but changing planes in Atlanta, GA. My return flight is the same way. Now, I'd like to know if on the way back, after collecting my bags in Atlanta and going through customs.....can I just leave the airport in Atlanta and not continue my flight back to Washington? I'd be more than happy to notify Delta at that time that I will not be flying back to Washington so they can free up those seats for any standby passengers. Also, I'm under the impression that my bags will not be checked all the way to Washington, DC....because we have to collect them in Atlanta, and go through customs, right? Please advise if you're sure of the answer. Thanks!!!!

You're right. After you clear customs IF you were continuing on you would bring your bags to an area for them to be sent to your Delta connecting flight. It would be a nice gesture to let Delta know but if you don't show up they will give your seat away so no one will miss out. Just thinking here, if you don't want someone to know what happened to you don't call Delta just poof vanish. If that's the case at least notify someone anyone that your OK to ease their mind & so they don't call the Police & issue a missing persons report. Good Luck.

In Atlanta, you exit the plane, reach customs, claim your bag BRIEFLY before re-checking it, even if Atlanta is your final destination, and then go through a security screening like you would when entering any airport in the US for a flight. You would then claim your bag at the main baggage claim if Atlanta is tagged on your bag as your final destination. To ease the entire process, I would simply notify Delta of the change in plans NOW so your bag goes where you want it to and there's not a problem with an international passenger going missing in Atlanta. All it takes is one overzealous about security gate agent to turn it into a potential terrorist incident if you don't have your tickets straightened out before then.

Is 1hr10min transfer time enough at Washington DC airport coming from Europe
Is 1hr10min transfer time enough at Washington DC airport coming from Europe?
I am flying from Frankfurt in Germany to Orlando via Washington DC. I have only 1hr10min to board my flight between DC and Orlando. Someone told me that the this is not enough and I might miss my plane due to the long lines at customs. Anyone working at an American airport that can throw some light? I am flying with a Lufthansa/ UA ticket all the way.

one hour ten would be plenty of time in LA or JFK .. from what I heard DC is pretty fast . providing you dont have to much to declare... peace

This is really not enough time! Customs and immigration can take 1 hour if they are busy. In fact, the minimum connecting time WITHOUT going through Customs is 45 minutes.... BTW...did you know that you can fly non-stop from Frankfurt to Orlando on Condor Flugdeinst?

Agreed that this may not be enough time with customs. Talk with the airline about your concern and see what they recommend.

If you are a US citizen, then I would say you are just fine. If you are not a citizen then you may not make it. Queues for foreigners going into any country can be very long and take some time to get you through. When I go to Japan, it sometimes takes as long as two hours just to get to customs, since the immigration line is so long. I see similar issues here when I come home to SFO. I walk through in like 10 minutes, but when my fiance visits from Japan it sometimes takes up to 90 minutes (she's a Japanese citizen, not American, yet), though it's normally around 35-50 minutes. I don't know if I want to take the risk. Maybe let you pass through because you are still going to an American airport and then you can go through immigration and customs there. I would check with the airline and Dulles to see what they say.

I would recommend giving yourself more time. The customs lines & security lines arent the only thing to consider. At this time of year, you need to think about weather too. Pilots may have to go a bit out of the way to fly out of the path of a lightning storm. Or the airport you're flying into or out of may be experiencing weather delays themselves... Good luck & happy traveling...
